In 2018 SERLC protected a considerable three thousand fifty-three (3,053) acres of forests, views, river banks, and farms in the Carolinas, Georgia, and Alabama. We’re proud to bring our cumulative total to 30,050 acres of land protected forever! And we’re looking forward to protecting more in the future.
Of the 76 projects, ten are in Alabama, thirty-five in Georgia, seventeen in North Carolina, twelve in South Carolina, and two in Tennessee. The projects vary greatly in size and the habitats protected range from the mountains, piedmont & sandhills, to the coast.
After wanting to protect land in the Swannanoa Mountains since studying their diversity and beauty way back in 1986, we had our chance to do just that! High mountain land rich in uncommon species will be protected in perpetuity for the scenic pleasure of the public from Interstate 40, the Blue Ridge Parkway (which is apparently the most visited National Park in the US), the Mountains to Sea Trail, and other locations. Switching from high mountains to coastal Georgia, we protected extensive wetlands graced by cypress trees and the only location in the state for a rare species. Plus we protected more scenic public views along a water trail for canoeists and kayakers, a second incredibly rare Granite Flatrock natural community, more farmland in South Carolina, and more!
